How do final drives work

The video below illustrates how an axial piston motor works. You will notice that the hydraulic fluid is red. Hydraulic motors can generate fairly high rotational speeds, but what machines like skid steers and excavators need is torque , not speed.

The final drive consists of a set of gears that reduce the speed but multiply the torque. This is typically achieved using a planetary gear set very similar to what you see below. This gear set has an outer ring gear and three planetary gears. This section of the final drive motor is sometimes called the gear hub or the planetary hub. It connects to the hydraulic motor via a drive shaft, which is laying on top of the gears in the image above.

An oil seal keeps the hydraulic fluid in the hydraulic portion of the final drive motor from the gear oil in the planetary hub. Axial piston motors are a common category of final drive motor, and are used on many different types of machines. When combined with a torque-multiplying gear set, they become a final drive motor.

Hydraulic pump is connected with the prime mover, and the pump shaft has no additional radial load; while hydraulic motor is connected with the load, such as sprockets, pulleys, gears and so on, its main shaft will bear a higher radial load.

Its speed can be varied by adjusting the setting of the throttle of the flow control valve. The speed can be infinitely varied as the excess oil goes through the pressure relief valve. When the four-way valve is de-activated, the motor stops suddenly and gets locked. There actually are three variables that affect flow: the orifice size, the pressure difference between the inlet and outlet of the orifice, and the oil temperature.

How do I know if my final drive is bad? How do you disassemble a final drive? How do you remove a refit and final drive unit? A final drive is located on loading shovels, mobile excavators, caterpillar excavators and bulldozers. A final drive transfers the power from the drive motor to the wheels or tracks.

It consists of various internal gears that increase the drive motor's power. Over time, a final drive will wear out. When the gears are worn, play between the gears develops. Ideally, everything should fit together seamlessly.

Wear becomes noticeable if you can move the bearings and gears back and forth by hand. We advise replacing the entire final drive in case of wear. If only a single part is replaced, it will wear out very quickly.
